Heads Up, Hearts Down

Heads Up, Hearts Down is the fourth track on the original release and current versions of I Fight Dragons' debut EP Cool Is Just A Number, though it briefly moved to track five for 2010's Atlantic Records re-release. It was the band's first single, and is a staple of their live shows. Aside from Warped Tour 2014, they haven't gone a single show without playing the song. Both lead singer Brian Mazzaferri and former live chiptune player/studio engineer Bill Prokopow have confirmed that it was the first song written specifically for I Fight Dragons. It was also confirmed to be the song that gave the two the idea to start the band.

About The Music Video
In 2010, there was a music video released for the song. The original intention was for this video to be used during the band's live sets while they played the song in time to the video, but when a label executive saw the finished product, they decided to release it as a stand-alone music video for the song. It was shot in a local bowling alley in the band's hometown of Chicago and featured a dance routine performed and choreographed by Brian's wife Lizzie Leopold's dance company Leopold Group. The video was shot in 3D, with the original intention being to have audience-members pick up free 3D glasses at the merch table before the show so that they could see it in 3D during the performance. This was ultimately scrapped shortly after the first test runs due to the cost. In the end, the band hated the idea of the video being a music video for the band, as they felt it didn't truly represent their personalities or attitude as a band. They had it removed from virtually all media outlets, though thanks to MTV not properly removing it from their site, the video is still up for public viewing. The cyan/red 3D version was eventually leaked online, but has since been removed.

Lyrics
Take a number dear
Wait your turn and don't get out of line
Everything you fear
Paint it black in the back of your mind
You go on breathing, repeating

Heads up, hearts down
Steady as she goes
Don't break step
Don't make a sound

Heads up, hearts down
No one ever knows what started
This exodus onward bound

Your composure slips
Twenty-two and nothing left to do
But resign to this
Bona fide Pilgrim Pride tried and true
so you don't question this lesson

Heads up, hearts down
Steady as she goes
Don't break step
Don't make a sound

Heads up, hearts down
No one ever know what started
This exodus onward bound

I try to find my strength inside the sound
But I can't fight the darkness all around
I'm bleeding 'til I drown

Heads up, hearts down
Steady as she goes
Don't break step
Don't make a sound

Heads up, hearts down
No one ever knows what started
This exodus onward bound
