Don't You?

Don't You? is the 2nd track of the Atlantic Records rerelease of Cool Is Just A Number and the 11th track of KABOOM!. The track was also released to fans through the band's mailing list for free. Each of these three versions is completely different from one another, featuring re-recorded instruments and vocals. The song was first played by the band as the opening song for their Dragon Fight! DVD in 2009. It has since become a live staple for the band and there have been few shows since where the song has not been played. You can scroll down to see a catalog of all recorded performances of the song.

Evolution of the Song
The song Don't You? was written by lead singer and founding member Brian Mazzaferri in the summer of 2008 under the original title Do You. This version was virtually identical to the final product, with only a small change in the lyrics. In a now lost interview with Brian, he stated the name was changed in 2009 because he felt that replacing all instances of "do" with the word "don't" would better represent the theme and tone of the track. The song was first played by the band in July of 2009, directly after Mike Mentzer's departure. This arrangement of the song (which can be heard on the mailing list and EP versions of the song) featured a slightly more simplistic solo from Packy Lundholm than in the current version, more chiptune and Laura Green performing the highest harmonies. After her departure from the band, the song underwent a complete overhaul, adding harmonies to Packy's guitar solo, eliminating Laura's harmony and chiptune parts, and choosing different waveforms for the chiptune of the track. The most current arrangement can be found on the band's debut album KABOOM! and is the version that is performed during all subsequent live shows since the rework.

Lyrics
Don't you, don't you wanna party?
Leave all the bullshit at the door
Don't you, don't you wanna party?
Drink up so you won't have to think no more
But no
You just smile and hit the floor

We all spend half our time
Running around fucked out of our minds
We spend the other half
Sleeping at desks and praying just to get back
Just to get back

Don't you, don't you wanna be famous?
Buy things like you don't even care
Don't you, don't you wanna be famous?
And everywhere you go have everybody stop and stare
But no
You go nowhere

We all spend half our time
Running around fucked out of our minds
We spend the other half
Sleeping at desks and praying just to get back
Just to get back

Don't you, don't you wanna know things?
Secrets of the head and the heart.
Don't you, don't you wanna know things?
With every word you say you're tearing people's worlds apart
But no
You say, "No way, no time, don't start"

We all spend half our time
Running around fucked out of our minds
We spend the other half
Sleeping at desks and praying just to get back
Just to get back
